The Mason Jar was patented by John Landis Mason in 1858. In a horrible twist of fate, the jar which became ubiquitous, and allowed for food to be safely stored -the threaded, rubberized zinc top created a hermetic seal and prevented microbial action, it did not improve the lot of J. Mason. He sold his patent to the Consolidated Fruit Company for a small amount of money and died penniless in New York City. Its sad that such an important invention which improved the quality of life for so many didn't at least somewhat provide for J.L. Mason in his later years. Everytime we enjoy strawberry jam -Isabelle and Kate's delicious recipe here) in January, or have veggies long past their season, we have Mason to thank for a modern method of food preservation until refrigeration hit the scene.

We have plenty of Mason Jars downstairs, ready for canning or whatever little treasures you want to use them for. The glass jars also make great little lunch pails. The classic design of the Mason jar makes even pencils and rubber bands look good.
